Xiaomi has launched three new smartphones in the Indian market – Mi 3, Redmi 1S and Redmi Note at Rs 13,999, Rs 6,999 and Rs 9,999.The phones will be exclusively available on ecommerce retailer Flipkart. While the Mi 3 will go on sale starting July 22, the two Redmi phones will be available in August.Xiaomi Mi 3 has a 5-inch Full HD display and runs on a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor with 2GB RAM. It is powered by Android 4.4 (KitKat) with Xiaomi’s proprietary MIUI skin on top. It packs 16GB internal storage.

The South Korean electronics giant is in a quiet push to make its Tizen operating system a part of the technology lexicon as familiar as Google’s Android or Apple’s iOS. The first developer conference in Asia for Tizen wrapped up Tuesday after a two-day run, bringing together app developers and Tizen backers from Samsung, Intel and mobile operators. Samsung promised to give out $4 million cash to the creators of the best Tizen apps. To succeed in a diverse market like India, a manufacturer needs a strong brand, extensive reach, quality products and above all a presence across multiple price bands. While Apple has the brands and quality products, it lacks the reach and broader portfolio, both of which can squeeze the margins. Apple’s India profit for fiscal year 2013 plunged to Rs 112.66 crore from Rs 311.5 crore a year ago as it aggressively chased volumes by unleashing a marketing blitz and promotional campaigns such as zero EMIs and smartphone buybacks to lure more Indians.  Read the rest of this entry »

Reliance Communications on Friday announced that it will be selling the iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S on a 2-year contract basis with Equated Monthly Instalments (EMIs) and no down-payment.

Under the scheme Reliance will offer iPhone5C for an EMI of Rs 2,499 per month over a 24-month period and iPhone 5S at Rs 2,999 per month over the same period. This payment comes bundled with free unlimited calls and SMSes (local and STD across network), apart from zero cost for 3G data usage. There is also no charge on national roaming.

Apple wants to set up 100 exclusive standalone stores under the franchisee model in smaller markets. It’s scouting for franchise partners and has made proposals to some of the multi-brand retail chains, the executives said. Apple has not set any deadline for setting up these stores in smaller towns in India, but is looking to roll them out this fiscal year.
